POP Art
Argon in Sun Yellow 10mm, Neon in Clear 10mm, acrylic backing, and vinyl | May 2023
In many of my works, I initiate a dialogue with viewers that challenges them to confront traditionally taboo topics. I describe this approach as a dichotomy of protest and parody. Drawing inspiration from the provocative dualities of Pop Art, this work is influenced by icons like Barbara Kruger, Lady Gaga, and Roy Lichtenstein, blending bold visual statements with playful, satirical elements. Through vibrant color palettes, bold text, and pop culture references, I create pieces that disarm viewers with humor and spectacle while also subverting societal norms and assumptions. The kitsch aesthetic—marked by its exaggerated charm and unapologetic attitude—becomes a deliberate tool in my practice, using wit and irony to critique cultural narratives. Pop Art’s legacy serves as the foundation for this exploration, where themes of intimacy and identity intersect to dismantle oppressive ideas. By crafting a work that is both accessible and thought-provoking, it highlights the intersections of power, resistance, and joy. Both the physical and symbolic layers of this piece invite viewers to reflect on these dynamics. This installation stands as an exuberant homage to the transformative energy of Pop Art and the resilience of queer expression, reminding us that art can simultaneously challenge and celebrate. Sometimes it is, exactly what it says it is.
